Bambi and Feline

Sister Saville called Ron this morning to report that there was a baby deer in her yard and she didn't see the mother anywhere. When Ron got there he found Sister Saville holding a darling fawn. They found another one and Ron brought them both home. There were huge mowers in the Saville's yard and they think that the mother got scared away, they were also worried that the the babies would get hit by the mowers. Sister Saville called again and had found a third fawn! Ron took them to Ken and Jane's garage until the mowers were finished. So we played with them and tried to feed them. After the mowers were gone Ron took them back to the Saville's yard in hopes that their mother will find them. When he checked later they were gone. Hopefully the family was reunited and they will live happily ever after.

  2. When we lived in Central New York (near Cayuga Lake) the deer would leave their "Fawn on the Lawn" near our house, on more than one occasion.

I was told this was a compliment - the mother felt the fawn was safe with us, while she went to forage for food. The fawns will remain perfectly still to avoid prey, and I was also told not to touch them, but to leave them alone - the mother WILL come back and get them.

I hope the mother did just that in this case. I was also told that handling them might change their scent and the mother might abandon them as a result. In which case, the fawns will disappear - when a predator gets them.

If you see a "fawn on the lawn" again, I would suggest you leave it alone (mow around it or mow another day) and wait for Mom to come back on her own. Picking up and handling the fawns is probably a bad idea.

Wild animals are cute, but they should be left alone.

    FWIW.
